Mamelodi Sundowns FC, commonly referred to as Sundowns, is one of the most successful football clubs in South African history. With a rich legacy spanning over three decades, the team has established itself as a force to be reckoned with in the world of football.
Early Years and Foundation
The club was founded in 1970 by a group of young men from the Mamelodi township in Pretoria, South Africa. Initially, the team struggled to find its footing, but under the guidance of visionary leaders, Sundowns began to flourish. In the early years, the team played in various amateur leagues before eventually joining the National Football League (NFL) in 1978.

The Rise to Prominence
The 1980s marked a significant turning point in Sundowns' history. With the appointment of experienced coach, Johan Boskamp, the team began to experience unprecedented success. In 1987, Sundowns won their first major trophy, the South African Cup, defeating Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 in the final.
